Short Bio

My name is Elisabeth Loose and I am a PhD researcher within the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Glasgow. My research is looking at the Maker movement, gender and the environment.  My 'career' in the Maker movement started when I was 3 years old and embarked upon small arts and craft projects with my grandma on a weekly basis. What started out as a hobby, has by now developed into a passion and life philosophy. Starting in Spring 2016, I have discovered making and the Maker movement as a research interest. My special focus is on the environment for which I have an equally big passion.

I grew up in a small town in Germany and have had many great opportunities to widen my horizon. Before starting my PhD in October 2016, I was a student on the school’s course MLitt Environment, Culture and Communication which sparked my interest in technology and the environment, among many other things. The degree led on well from my previous work in a German national park where I taught school groups of all ages about environmental processes and led guided tours through the park.

My interest in the environment was not straightforward and has grown over the years. In the years 2012/13 I studied at the University’s main campus for an MSc degree in Chinese Studies. My dissertation looked at China’s dams on the Mekong River and how they affected not just the ecosystem of the river, but also the riparian states, their societies, and their commitments to dam building. After having finished the degree, I spent 3 months on a permaculture site in Hong Kong’s jungle.

Whereas I did all my postgraduate degrees in Scotland, my undergraduate degree BA Music & Media and Regional Studies Asia/Africa was done with the Humboldt University of Berlin. During that time, I spent 6 months in Hangzhou, China, in order to improve my Chinese language skills.
